Before you start a community on Reddit, you need to meet a few conditions. First, your account should be at least 30 days old.

Second, you must have a minimum amount of karma points (Reddit Karma is a point system that rewards you for posting and commenting on Reddit.). 

Reddit has not specified the minimum number of karma points required to create a subreddit. If you don’t see the “Create Community” button on the sidebar, it means that you are not yet eligible to create a subreddit. 

Try joining more communities and commenting on posts to improve your Karma on Reddit.

Here’s how to make a community on Reddit:

1. Click on the “Create Community” button
2. Give your community a name
3. Select community type
4. Check or Uncheck the “Adult content” box
5. Click on the “Create Community” button
6. Add a short description
7. Add a primary topic

To begin, sign in to your Reddit account. After logging in, scroll down to the “Create Community” button on the sidebar.

The “Create Community” button is listed under the title “Home”. You’ll also see the “Create Post” button above the “Create Community” button.

Simply, click on the “Create Community” button and proceed to the next step.

2. Give your community a name

After clicking the “Create Community” button, a pop-up window will prompt you to enter the community’s details.

Enter the community’s name in the first field. You can change the community name later, but you cannot change the community handle (example: r/otherwayround).

So double-check it before proceeding to the next step.

The following are some guidelines to follow while choosing a community name:

1. No spaces are allowed in names (Correct: r/otherwayround Incorrect: r/other way round).
2. There should be a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 21.
3. Only underscores ( _ ) are allowed as special characters.
4. Avoid names that are primarily trademarked (Correct: r/TwitterFans Incorrect: r/Twitter)

3. Select community type

The third step is to select the community type. You can keep the community public, restricted, or private.

Public: This type of community is open to anybody who wishes to view, post, or comment.

Restricted: This type of community is open to the public, but only approved users are allowed to post.

Private: Only approved users have access to read and contribute to this community.

4. Check or Uncheck the “Adult content” box

In the fourth step, you must let Reddit know if you are going to post NSFW content in your community.

Selecting the “Adult content” checkbox indicates that you want to post adult content in your community.

If the content is appropriate for people of all ages, uncheck the “Adult content” checkbox. (By default, the “Adult content” box is unchecked).

5. Click on the “Create Community” button

Now, you can click on the “Create Community” button to create your community. Double-check the entered information before you click on the button.

You have successfully created a community on Reddit. You’ll get a message from Reddit after you create the community, make sure you read the message and follow all the rules listed in that message.

6. Add a short description

To add a description to your Reddit community, simply click on the arrow located on the top right next to your profile picture and select “Profile”.

Now, scroll down to see your community listed on the sidebar. Click on it to open your Reddit community.

Replace “YourCommunityName” with the name you entered in the second step.

After you open your community page, click on the “Add description” button on the sidebar to add a description to your page.

Describe your community in less than 500 words. Make sure you enter the keywords to make your community more discoverable.

7. Add a primary topic

Now, select a primary topic so that viewers can understand what the community is all about.

Click on “Add a Primary Topic” and select a topic from the dropdown list.

Select the “None Of These Topics” option if you don’t see your primary topic.

Now, click on the “Add subtopics” button and enter the relevant subtopics or select the suggested topics. You have the option of adding up to 25 subtopics.

How to make a Reddit community private?
